  4.     Earth's wrath at our assaults is slow to come
  5.     But relentless when it does. It has to do
  6.     With catastrophic change, and with the limit
  7.     At which one order more of magnitude
  8.     Will bring us to a qualitative change
  9.     And disasters drastically different
  10.     From those we daily have to know about.
  11.     As with the speed of light, where speed itself
  12.     Becomes a limit and an absolute;
  13.     As with the splitting of the atom
  14.     And a little later of the nucleus;
  15.     As with the millions rising into billions --
  16.     The piker's kind in terms of money, yes,
  17.  
  18.     But a million square in terms of time and space
  19.     As the universe grew vast while the earth
  20.     Our habitat diminished to the size
  21.     Of a billiard ball, both relative
  22.     To the cosmos and to the numbers of ourselves,
  23.     The doubling numbers, the earth could accommodate.
  24.     We stand now in the place and limit of time
  25.     Where hardest knowledge is turning into dream,
  26.     And nightmares still confined in sleeping dark
  27.     Seem on the point of bringing into day
  28.     The sweating panic that starts the sleeper up.
  29.     One or another nightmare may come true,
  30.     And what to do then? What in the world to do?
